As a law firm that works closely with the victims of car crashes in Tampa and throughout Florida, Franco Law Group urges drivers and pedestrians to be safe this holiday season. The winter holidays should be a time for celebration with friends and family and not a time to be handling the serious and often tragic ramifications of a motor vehicle or premises accident.
In 2011, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism reported that alcohol or drug related traffic crashes in the U.S. increased threefold during the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. This is no surprise, as the Wednesday before Thanksgiving has been documented as one of the biggest partying nights of the year, and nobody needs to be told that DUI-related accidents are more common during New Year’s Eve. To further cement this claim, the NIAAA also reported that 40% of motor vehicle accident deaths during the holiday season involve a drunk driver (in contrast to a 31 percent figure during other times of the year). Consider these helpful tips on avoiding holiday accidents:
Don’t Drink and Drive!
This goes without saying, but, as mentioned above, so many residents are deciding to drive their vehicles while under the influence of alcohol. Also be sure to never ride in the car with someone who is drunk. If you find yourself inebriated, caught up in the festivities, and in need of a ride home, there are many options available to you:
- Using a sober, designated driver.
- Using public transportation such as Hart Bus
- Calling a local taxi service
- Using a transportation app service like Uber or Lyft
Don’t use your phone
You may feel the need to try and text or call your family and close friends while shopping for gifts. This is fine – just don’t do it on the road! Driving when you’re distracted is simply dangerous – and especially so if you are attempting to get through busy holiday traffic on the interstate or in congested areas near malls and other shopping centers.
Don’t get angry
The holidays can be an extremely stressful season, and the congestion that you encounter on the roads don’t ever help. It is important that you don’t let your stress influence how you navigate through traffic and deal while bad drivers. This type of behavior easily leads to dangerous situations such as racing to beat stop lights, tailgating, or even road-rage incidents.
We know – you have so much that needs to get done! But try to resist the urge to speed as much as you can. Speeding can not only cause you to lose control of your own vehicle, but it also limits your ability to react to other things that are going on around you, such as pedestrians or even other crashes. Plan ahead to make sure that you are giving yourself plenty of time to get to wherever it is you need to be.
