What is the first thing I should do after a Florida car accident?
If you’re involved in an accident in Florida, you should first make sure you’re in a safe location. If you’re in a safe location, the first thing you should do after that is take pictures of everything you can take pictures of at the scene, where the vehicles are before they’re moved if possible. After you’re in the accident and the police have come, done their report, and you have gathered any witness information that may be available to you at the scene, do not rely on the police department to get the witness information for you, that it will be on the police report. Oftentimes that is left off. So if there are witnesses at the accident scene, please be sure that you get their information before leaving. If you have sustained injuries in the accident, seek medical treatment. If you do not believe that you need to go to an emergency room, that is fine, but seek some type of medical treatment either from your PCP or a walk-in clinic. If you don’t receive treatment within 14 days from your date of accident, you may lose your benefit to PIP benefits or personal injury protection. These are benefits that you’ve paid premiums for for your health insurance. If you go on day 15, you will not receive those benefits.
